Jahana Flemming Hayes (born March 8, 1973 in Walcott , Connecticut ) is an American teacher and politician of the Democratic Party . She received the 2016 National Teacher of the Year Award. She has served as a member of the United States House of Representatives for Connecticut's 5th Congressional District since 2019, making her the first black woman to be elected to Congress for Connecticut .

Life

Hayes grew up in poverty on the Berkeley Heights housing project in Waterbury . Her family struggled with addiction, relied on public aid, and at some point lost their home. Hayes became pregnant at 17 and raised her daughter alone. She was forced to give up her advanced courses and move to an alternative school for teenage mothers. Even so, she enrolled at Naugatuck Valley Community College, then earned her four-year degree from Southern Connecticut State University, and her master's and advanced degrees from the University of Saint Joseph and the University of Bridgeport while working on her young family support. As a single mother, she worked at the state-owned Southbury Training School, where she often had to work involuntary double shifts due to understaffing. In addition to teaching politics and history at Kennedy High School, Hayes led the Kennedy SOAR Review Board, which provides a "school within a school" program for gifted students applying to take their advanced courses. She was a co-advisor to HOPE, a student service club at Kennedy High that has raised thousands of dollars to support local Relay for Life cancers and participate in Habitat for Humanity Builds in New Orleans and Charleston.

Political career

In 2016, Hayes caught national attention when then- US President Barack Obama awarded her a crystal apple statuette for being named National Teacher of the Year. She was also honored on the Ellen DeGeneres Show , and Kennedy High School received $ 20,000 on her behalf. After Hayes was named National Teacher of the Year, he traveled to 30 states to learn about the problems facing communities across the country. She then returned to Waterbury to work on teacher recruitment for her district.

Hayes occupied the seat as the Connecticut 5th District Congressional Representative to former Democratic MP Elizabeth Esty , who announced in April 2018 that she would not run for re-election. Hayes was elected to office on November 6, 2018. She is a member of Parliament's Committee on Education and Labor and the Parliament's Agriculture Committee.
