Charles Emile Krafft (born February 7, 1863 in Aigle VD , Canton of Vaud , † August 10, 1921 in Corsier-sur-Vevey , Canton of Vaud) was a Swiss surgeon .

Life

The son of the pharmacist Henri Jean Krafft (1833–1908) and Laure Elise Marie, b. Verrey, studied medicine at the Lausanne Academy and the Universities of Freiburg im Breisgau , Bern and Zurich (1887). In 1888 he earned his doctorate. Pastor Antony Krafft-Bonnard (1869–1945) was one of his siblings . Cousin (Heinrich Eduard) Hartmann Rordorf (* 1865) began his training in his father's pharmacy in 1883.

In 1888/89, as assistant to Richard von Volkmann in Halle, he pioneered appendectomy in Europe. Before 1880, both the clinical picture of appendicitis and the now self-evident indication for appendectomy were still completely unknown. The inflammatory affections in the right lower abdomen were regarded as purulent inflammations of the cecum.

In September 1888 he married Mariane Petronella Domela Nieuwenhuis (born July 4, 1867 in Amsterdam , † February 24, 1944 in Lausanne ), the daughter of the Groningen law professor Jacob Domela Nieuwenhuis (and sister of Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis ). The couple had children Henri, Edouard, Agénor, Ferdinand, Irène (∞ Albert Masnata ) and Arthur.

In 1891 Valérie de Gasparin appointed him head of the Protestant nursing school La Source in Lausanne . There he founded a hospital school with a clinic, polyclinic and infirmary and modernized and professionalized nursing training.

He was a member of several medical associations and the Swiss Commission for Medicine. The Fondation Docteur Charles Krafft existed from 1912 to 1980 .
