John Treadwell

John Treadwell (born November 23, 1745 in Farmington , Colony of Connecticut , † August 19, 1823 ibid) was an American politician and the fourth governor of the US state Connecticut . He was a member of the Federalist Party .

Early years and political advancement

John Treadwell graduated from Yale University in 1767 , studied law and then opened his own legal practice in Farmington. Some time later, he decided to embark on a political career and moved as a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives , to which he was a member between 1776 and 1783. He was then elected to the government council, where he remained until 1798. He was also elected several times between 1784 and 1787 as a delegate to the Continental Congress, but did not take part in its meetings. In 1788 he was a delegate to the State Convention that ratified the United States Constitution. Treadwell also served as judge in the Probate Court of Farmington and the Supreme Court of Errors between 1789 and 1809. He was elected lieutenant governor of Connecticut in 1798 . In 1805 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Connecticut Governor

On August 7, 1809, incumbent governor Jonathan Trumbull died . After his death, Treadwell took over the office. On April 9, 1810, Treadwell was officially elected to the office of governor by popular vote. During his tenure, the plans for the Hartford Fire Insurance Company were made and in February 1811 the Non-Intercourse Act was reinstated by Connecticut's opposition. This was the result of a threat of war on the part of the United States against Great Britain . Treadwell failed in his re-election attempt, so he left office on May 9, 1811.

Later years

He later served on the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1818. Governor John Treadwell died on August 19, 1823 and was buried in Farmington Old Cemetery . Treadwell was married with one child.
