James L. Howard

James Leland Howard (born January 18, 1818 in Windsor , Vermont , †  May 1, 1906 in Hartford , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1889 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Connecticut.

Career

James Howard enjoyed an academic education. He then worked for some time in the state of New York as a clerk ( Clerk ). From 1838 he lived in Hartford (Connecticut), where he worked in the trade. From 1841 he was there together with a partner in a company that manufactured saddles and carriage equipment. Later they also fitted out railroad cars. Over time, Howard joined other companies. Among other things, he was President of Hartford City Gas Light Company , Director of Phoenix National Bank and Traveler's Insurance Company and Hartford County Fire Insurance Company . He was also a board member of the New York and New England Railroad .

Politically, Howard was originally a member of the Whig Party . After its dissolution, he joined the Republican Party founded in 1854 . In the years 1878 and 1880 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of Mayor of Hartford. In 1886 Howard was elected lieutenant governor of Connecticut alongside Phineas C. Lounsbury . He held this office between 1887 and 1889. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He died on May 1, 1906 in Hartford, where he was also buried.
