William H. Bulkeley

William Henry Bulkeley (born March 2, 1840 in East Haddam , Connecticut , †  November 7, 1902 in Hartford , Connecticut) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Connecticut.

Career

William Bulkeley was the younger brother of Morgan Bulkeley (1837-1922), who was both Connecticut Governor and US Senator for that state. The brothers' father was a member of both chambers of the Connecticut General Assembly . In 1847 the family moved to Hartford. William attended high school there, but left it prematurely and without a degree. He then worked as a clerk in a haberdashery store. In March 1857 he moved to Brooklyn , New York , where he worked in the same industry at H. P. Morgan & Co. He later started his own business. During the Civil War , Bulkeley served in the Union Army . In 1868 he returned to Hartford, where he founded the Kellog & Bulkeley Company , of which he remained president for many years. He was also the vice president of the life insurance company Aetna Life Insurance Company .

Politically, he joined the Republican Party . He was a member of Hartford City Council for five years and chaired it for a year. He also sat on the local road construction committee. In 1880, Bulkeley was elected lieutenant governor of Connecticut, alongside Hobart B. Bigelow . He held this office between 1881 and 1883. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In 1882 he ran unsuccessfully for governor. After that, he no longer appeared politically. He died in Hartford on November 7, 1902.
