Giant grave Su cuaddu 'e Nixias, preserved portal stele with round hole

The giant grave of Su cuaddu 'e Nixias (also Su Quaddu de Nixias ) is located near Lunamatrona in the province of Sud Sardegna in Sardinia . It takes its name on the one hand from the area where it is located (i.e. Nixias) and on the other from the unusual round hole in the upper part of the portal stele, which in historical times may have been used to tie horses.

The buildings called “Tumbas de los zigantes” and ( Italian Tombe dei Giganti - plur.) In Sardu are the largest prenuraghic cult structures in Sardinia and are among the latest megalithic structures in Europe . The 321 known giant tombs are monuments of the Bronze Age Bonnanaro culture (2,200–1,600 BC), which is a precursor to the Nuragic culture .

Phase 1 stone chest

There was originally a stone box at this point , as some painted vases of the Monte Claro culture (2500–2000 BC) were found during the excavation , which erected such boxes. In Li Lolghi , too, an older facility was expanded into a giant grave . The outline of the stone box can still be seen in the floor of the chamber. It was square with sides of about one meter and slabs of marl that stuck 0.6 m in the ground.

Phase 2 giant grave

Finds show that the giant grave was built as a monument to the Bonnanaro culture (1800–1500 BC) around 1600 BC. In the Middle Bronze Age . The corridor of the chamber, which was originally covered by horizontal slabs, of which there are no more traces today, was about 10.0 m long and was also made of marl slabs. Almost the entire left side of the central stele, which is 2.9 m high and 2.7 m wide, is missing. Since this stone also consists of local, slightly brittle marl, damage could not be avoided. The lower part with the rare, roughly square entrance in the middle is the least damaged because it was covered with earth 0.6 m high up to the excavation. The exedra had an arch of 13.9 m and was formed by plates that were all knocked off.
