Monte Claro culture

Cultural sequence

The Monte Claro culture is named after a suburb of the city of Cagliari . It is the first purely Copper Age culture on the island of Sardinia . It is the successor of the Abealzu-Filigosa cultures and, in parts of the island, the predecessor of the Bell Beaker culture, which dates back to the Bronze Age .

Based on radiocarbon dates from the Grotta Filiestru to 2700–2200 BC. The culture dated to the 3rd century BC is best known for its oven graves and unusual ceramics that show relationships with the Piano Conte culture in southern Italy and the Fontbouisse culture in the French Midi . These include flat bowls and plates as well as wide-necked pots and situles . The vessels are decorated with grooves or have a dot pattern.

The Monte Claro people also used the Domus de Janas of the previous cultures (e.g. Necropoli di Montessu , Santu Pedru and Sas Concas ) and probably also erected statue menhirs . They are proven to be the sole inhabitants of the prenuraghic settlement "Sa Sedda de Biriai" near Oliena and as users of Monte Baranta .
