Culture and sights

Buildings

There are about 10 churches, all of which are architecturally quite simple. The parish church of St. Ignatius from 1734 is, like most of the Jesuit churches in Sardinia, built with three side chapels each but without a profiled transept. Inside there is a wooden statue of the founder of the Jesuit order of St. Ignatius of Loyola , who holds the book of the “Constitutiones Societatis Jesu” in his hands. The church is consecrated to him. In the sacristy hangs the "Retablo di San Cristoforo", which has influences from Umbrian Quattrocento painting and is an example of the popular trend among Catalan reredos of the late 15th century. The double triptych shows between St. Appolonia and St. Rochus St. Christopher, including Mary enthroned between St. Julius and Fabian. The predella depicts John the Baptist, the Sardinian St. George of Suelli, Christ (Pietà), Nicholas of Bari and St. Gavinus of Torres (also a Sardinian saint).

music

As in many Sardinian villages, Canti Sardi are sung on many occasions in Oliena - traditional Sardinian choir songs in which 4 tenores a cappella produce a moving sound. In addition, you sometimes dance traditional round dances, but these can also be accompanied by accordion music.

Regular events

Costumes
  • The Easter Sunday procession ( S'Incontru ) is probably the most famous in the area.
  • At Cortes Apertas , traditional handicrafts etc. are presented in the old courtyards.
  • There are also festivals in honor of San Lussurio (August 18–24), S.Antonio (a large bonfire is lit in the village) and S.Giovanni (June 24th).
