Robert K. Killian

Robert K. Killian (born September 15, 1919 in Hartford , Connecticut , †  June 25, 2005 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1975 and 1979 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Connecticut.

Career

Robert Killian attended Union College in Schenectady, New York State , until 1942 . During World War II , he served in the United States Army for four years . He was used in the Pacific region. For his military achievements he received several awards, including the Purple Heart . After a subsequent law degree at Harvard University and his admission as a lawyer in 1948, he worked in a law firm in Hartford in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1963 he became his party's local chairman for Hartford. Between 1967 and 1975 he held the office of Attorney General of his state.

In 1974, Killian was elected lieutenant governor of Connecticut alongside Ella T. Grasso . He held this office between 1975 and 1979. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . During this time he fell out with Grasso. Therefore, he stood in the primary of his party for the gubernatorial election in 1978 against this, but failed. Through this candidacy, he also lost another nomination for the office of lieutenant governor. Had he kept this, he would automatically have become governor of Connecticut in 1980 after Grasso's resignation.

For more than a decade, Killian was Chairman of the Hartford Civic Center and Coliseum Commission . He died on June 25, 2005 in his hometown of Hartford.
