George C. Jepsen

George Christian Jepsen (born November 23, 1954 in Hattiesburg , Mississippi ) is an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was a member of both chambers of the Connecticut General Assembly between 1987 and 2003, served as Chairman of the Connecticut Democratic Party from 2003 to 2005, and has served as Connecticut Attorney General since January 2011 .

Life

Jepsen grew up the second of three children. In 1955 his family moved to Greenwich , Connecticut. Jepsen attended the schools there. He then studied at Dartmouth College in Hanover , New Hampshire , where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1976 . Jepsen studied now at Harvard University , where he received a Juris Doctor at the Law School there in 1982 and a Masters at the John F. Kennedy School of Government .

In 1986 he was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives, where he represented the 148th District from 1987 to 1991. In 1990 he was elected to the Connecticut Senate , where he represented the 27th district from 1991 to 2003. As a senator he was chairman of the Judiciary Committee from 1993 to 1995 . He was also a member of the Finance Committee from 1995 to 1997 . From 1997 to 2003 he was a Senate Majority Leader .

Before the gubernatorial elections in 2002 he sought only to the nomination for the Democratic candidate, but was finally running mate of Bill Curry and a candidate for the office of Lieutenant Governor . In 2003 he became chairman of the Connecticut Democratic Party, replacing John W. Olsen . Jespen held this office until 2005, when he declined to run for a second term. Nancy DiNardo became his successor. In 2010, he was elected the 24th Connecticut Attorney General, taking office on January 5, 2011.

Jepsen has been married since 1990 and has two sons.
