Odell Shepard

Odell Shepard (born July 22, 1884 in Sterling , Illinois , †  July 19, 1967 in New London , Connecticut ) was an American writer and politician . Between 1941 and 1943 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Connecticut.

Life

Odell Shepard graduated from Harvard University . He then taught English at Yale University for some time . Between 1917 and 1946 he was on the faculty of Trinity College , Hartford . During this time he also published works by well-known American writers, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow . He also wrote several books and treatises himself. For his biography Pedlar's Progress: The Life of Bronson Alcott he received the Pulitzer Prize in 1938 for biography or autobiography .

Politically, Shepard joined the Democratic Party . In 1940 he was elected lieutenant governor of Connecticut alongside Robert A. Hurley . He held this office between 1941 and 1943. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . Odell Shepard died on July 19, 1967 in New London.
