Sterling is a city (with the status " City ") in Whiteside County in the northwest of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2010 , Sterling had 15,370 residents.

Sterling is at 41 ° 47'19 "north latitude and 89 ° 46'41" west longitude and extends over 13 km². The place forms the center of the Sterling Township .

Sterling is on the Rock River across from the neighboring town of Rock Falls . Other neighboring towns are Dixon (20.9 km east-northeast), Tampico (22.3 km southwest), Round Grove (18.6 km west) and Palmyra (14.2 km northeast).

The closest major cities are Rockford (87.4 km northeast), Chicago (187 km east), Peoria (128 km south), and the Quad Cities (92.3 km southwest).

Illinois State Route 2 runs through the city along the Rock River in a west-east direction . In the center the llinois & State Route 40 crosses and then crosses the river over a bridge in a southerly direction to Rock Falls. All other roads are subordinate, partly unpaved roads as well as inner-city roads.

Several Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF Railway lines cross in Sterling, as well as a route from Amtrack west of Chicago.

The nearest airfield is Whiteside County Airport on the southern outskirts of Rock Falls (6 km south); the nearest major airports are Chicago Rockford International Airport, 81.2 km northeast, and Quad City International Airport, 93 km southwest .

According to the 2010 census , there were 15,370 people in 6303 households in sterling. The population density was 1182.3 people per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.38 people lived in each of the 6303 households.
