Prophetstown is a city (with the status " City ") in Whiteside County in the northwest of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2010 Prophetstown had 2,080 residents.

Prophetstown lies at 41 ° 40'17 "north latitude and 89 ° 56'10" west longitude and extends over 4 km². The city forms the center of the Prophetstown Township .

Prophetstown is on the Rock River ; the Mississippi , which forms the border with Iowa , is about 40 km to the west.

Neighboring towns are Lyndon (6 km north), Tampico (17.8 km southeast), Hooppole (17.4 km south) and Erie (15.5 km west).

The closest major cities are Dubuque (134 km northwest), Rockford (116 km northeast), Peoria (129 km south-southeast) and the Quad Cities (73.2 km west-southwest).

The Illinois State Route 78 runs through Prophetstown in a north-south direction and crosses the Rock River north of the city. All other roads are subordinate or inner-city connecting roads.

According to the 2010 census , Prophetstown had 2,080 people in 831 households. The population density was 520 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.31 people lived in each of the 831 households.

The racial the population was composed of 97.7 percent white, 0.7 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and 0.4 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.3 percent of the population.

Extraordinary events

At 02:30 on July 15, 2013, a fire broke out in Washington Street, which developed into a major fire and completely destroyed an entire row of houses with six residential and commercial buildings, and two other houses were badly damaged. The cause was arson, which is why two young people aged 16 and 12 were arrested as suspects. The event received a lot of media coverage, in particular the undersized water supply of the place was insufficient and the fire brigade therefore had the greatest difficulties. The water had to be brought in from the river and ponds, in some cases with private tank trucks.
