Michael Schickhofer (born December 20, 1979 in Weiz ) is an Austrian former politician ( SPÖ ) and management consultant . From 2010 to 2013 he was a member of the Austrian National Council . In January 2013 he became a state councilor in the Styrian state government Voves II . From January 2016 to November 2019 he was state party chairman of the SPÖ in Styria , and from June 16, 2015 to December 17, 2019, he was Deputy Governor of Styria in the state government of Schützenhöfer I.

education and profession

Schickhofer attended elementary school in Weiz between 1986 and 1990 and then switched to the local federal high school in 1990, which he graduated from in 1998 with the Matura . He then did his community service between 1998 and 1999 and from 1999 studied business administration at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz . In December 2019 it was announced that he would become an innovation coach for the Styrian business development agency SFG and head and coordinator of the regional innovation coaching (RIC).

Political career

Schickhofer began his political career in local politics, where he was a councilor in the municipality of Weiz from 2000 to 2009. Within the party, he has also been active as a member of the SPÖ Weiz District Party Board since 2001 and as a member of the SPÖ Weiz District Party Presidium since 2006. He was also the executive district chairman of the young generation in the SPÖ Weiz 2003-2005 and speaker for city marketing and city cooperation in Weiz 2003-2009.

From October 2011 to June 2014 he was the SPÖ district chairman and from June 2014 to February 2016 he was regional chairman of the SPÖ East Styria.

He has been a member of the SPÖ Styrian regional party executive since 2010, and in January 2016 he was elected regional party chairman of the SPÖ Styria. In addition, he has been a member of the SPÖ's federal party executive and deputy federal party chairman since 2014.

On September 22nd, 2010 he was sworn in for the resigned MP Christian Faul as a Member of the National Council and in October 2010 he was elected to the Building Committee and the National Defense Committee. From February 3, 2011 he was also a member of the Standing Subcommittee on European Union Affairs.

Schickhofer is deputy chairman of the Association for the Promotion of Regional Development - Regionalmanagement Oststeiermark.

After a government reshuffle on January 21, 2013 Schickhofer took over the agendas of education, youth and family in the Styrian state government from Elisabeth Grossmann and resigned from the National Council. Since June 16, 2015 he is governor -Stellvertreter (finance, investments, communities, regions, security) of Styria. On July 4, 2017, he announced that he would hand over the finance department to Anton Lang .

In April 2018, Schickhofer called for a boycott of Coca Cola due to the expected US punitive tariffs for European products . He was heavily criticized for this by the works council of the Austrian Coca-Cola subsidiary, which supplies Austria and some neighboring countries with the drink with over 1200 employees, and was accused of endangering jobs.

After the losses of his party in the Styrian state elections in 2019 on November 24th, Schickhofer resigned one day later as party chairman of the SPÖ Styria; until the formation of a new government, he will remain in office as Deputy Governor.

Since joining the state government, Schickhofer has been committed to increasing investments in the Styrian regions. Since January 1, 2018, the Styrian Regional Development Act regulates the further development of the Styrian regions as an attractive educational, work and living space as well as the strengthening of competitiveness and the increase in added value of the Styrian regions. With the coming into force of the law, the decentralized regions of Styria will be granted significantly higher financial resources for investments in infrastructure, social and labor market policy measures.

Environment, climate and energy

In 2017, Schickhofer initiated a major offensive for investments in renewable energies in the state. Investments of 300 million euros were made in the expansion of large projects. Projects such as the Handalm wind farm, the hydropower plant in Graz or the e-mobility offensives in Almenland and Murtal are intended to make a contribution to a secure and CO 2 -free energy supply in Styria.

Awards

At the New Year's reception on January 13, 2017 in the auditorium of the Old University in Graz, he received the Great Silver Decoration of Honor from the Styrian Fire Brigade Association.
