Fulton is a city (with the status " City ") in Whiteside County in the northwest of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2010 Fulton had 3481 residents. The city was originally named after Constantin François Volney Volney , but was subsequently named after the engineer Robert Fulton .

Fulton lies at 41 ° 52'02 "north latitude and 90 ° 09'34" west longitude and extends over 6 km². The place forms the center of the Fulton Township , but extends to a small part into the neighboring Garden Plain Township to the south .

Fulton is located on the Mississippi across from the larger neighboring city of Clinton , Iowa . Other neighboring towns are Thomson (12.2 km north-northeast), Morrison (18.5 km east-southeast) and Albany (12.7 km south-southwest).

The closest major cities are Dubuque (97.2 km north-northwest), Rockford (122 km east-northeast) and the Quad Cities (64.5 km southwest).

By Fulton herein the Illinois portion extending along the Mississippi Great River Road forming Illinois State Route 84 . US Highway 30 forms the southern outskirts of the city . On the Mark N. Norris Bridge is the western end point of Illinois State Route 136 , which forms the extension of the State Route of the same name in Iowa and leads east through Fulton. All other roads are subordinate or inner-city connecting roads.

A railway line of the BNSF Railway runs through Fulton in a north-south direction .

The nearest major airport is Quad City International Airport, 40 miles southwest of Fulton .
