Thomson is located in Carroll County in the northwest of the US -amerikanischen State of Illinois on the Illinois State Route 84 near the Mississippi with 559 inhabitants.
To the north of the town is the Thomson Correctional Center, a modern, but largely unused, high-security prison .
Thomson is known for growing watermelons , which has earned the place the nickname Melon Capital of the World .

Thomson is located at latitude 41 ° 57 ′ 31 ″ north and longitude 90 ° 05 ′ 56 ″ west about 1.5 km east of the Mississippi, 15 km northwest of Clinton, Iowa , 60 km northeast of the Quad Cities and about 190 km west of Chicago . The place has an area of 5.7 km², which consists exclusively of land.

In the 2000 census, the population was 559. These were distributed over 234 households in 160 families. The population density was 253.2 / km². There were 244 buildings, which corresponds to a density of 42.6 / km².
The population in 2000 was 97.32% white , 0.54% Native American , 0.89% Asian and 0.36% other. 0.89% said they came from at least two of these groups. 0.54% of the population were Hispanics belonging to any of the above groups.
23.6% were under 18 years of age, 8.2% between 18 and 24, 24.2% between 25 and 44, 23.3% between 45 and 64 and 20.8% 65 and over. The average age was 41 years. Statistically, there were 91.4 men for every 100 women, 87.7 among those over 18.

The Thomson Correctional Center opened in 2001, but the 1,600-place high-security wing was not in use until 2009. Only the area with 200 detention places, managed as a minimum security unit , has been occupied with an average of 150 detainees since 2006 .
On December 15, 2009, President Barack Obama ordered the unused state prison in Thomson to be prepared to house a limited number of terrorist suspects.
