Savanna Army Depot

In 1917, the United States Army purchased a 53 square kilometer area seven miles northwest of Savanna to create the Savanna Army Depot . Originally it was used as a test area for ammunition from the Rock Island arms factory until it was converted into an arms store in 1921. In 2000, under the Base Realignment and Closure Act passed by Congress on March 18, 1995, the weapons store was closed and then opened for other uses. One of the most controversial projects is the newly built prison to this day. Most of the area has been made available to various nature and landscape protection projects.

Savanna today

Savanna – Sabula Bridge from Savanna, IL to Sabula, IA, listed in the NRHP since 1999

Savanna is located between Chicago and St. Louis and is visited by many weekenders from these two metropolitan areas . Many are attracted by the small town charm of the city and the low real estate prices, so that there are now many second homes here.

The city center has been reconstructed since the mid-1990s. Since the decision to close the Savanna Army Depot was announced , various efforts have been made to locate more shops on Main Street. Most of the buildings erected at the end of the 19th century have been supplemented with new, historically appropriate lighting and other elements. There is strong competition from Galena in neighboring Jo Daviess County .

Savanna is jokingly called the "metropolis of Carrol County" because it is the only traffic light in the entire county.
