Neuville-sur-Authou is a French municipality with 194 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Eure in the region of Normandy .

geography

Neuville-sur-Authou is located in the east of the Lieuvin , between the neighboring communities of Saint-Victor-d'Épine in the west and Brétigny in the east, 14 kilometers northeast of Bernay and 5 kilometers west of the Risle valley on an old Roman road , the Brionne ( Breviodurum ) associated with Dreux ( Durocasses ). The hamlet of Boucheville and the districts of La Davoudière and Le Mesnil belong to the municipality . The center is called Le Village .

geology

The soil consists of chalky alluvial soil on site . This means there is a risk that Marnières (old marl pits ) cause a landslide . The 1.5 to 2 meters wide and many meters deep holes can be created after heavy rain, for example. There are openings in the access shafts, the debris filling of which was washed into the side passages. The ceilings of the mining shafts can also collapse, creating wider holes. Landslides due to heavy rainfall occurred in the community in December 1999. On March 31, 2001, the ceiling of a Marnière collapsed, creating a 25 meter deep hole with a diameter of 10 meters. One person died in the process.

history

The name of the municipality is derived from the Latin expression nova villa , which means "new city". The Authou was the name of a part of a watercourse that is now called La Croix Blanche after a leprosy near Livet-sur-Authou and in Authou it is only called le torrent ('the torrent'). It is only after it has passed Authou that the people still call it Authou today. However, this watercourse is called La Croix Blanche along its entire length on the website of the Office national de l'eau ('National Water Authority') . The hamlet of Boucheville was mentioned in a document as Bougeville in the 13th century .

Robert de Ros from Bolton in Northumberland gave the Church of Notre-Dame (" Our Lady ") in Neuville-sur-Authou to the Abbey of Le Bec in the 12th century . This donation was confirmed by Robert de Cantelou . From the early 17th century until the French Revolution (1789–1799), the Neuville fiefdom belonged to the de Bellemare family .

Neuville-sur-Authou received in 1793 in the course of the French Revolution the status of a municipality (as Neuville sur Authon ) and in 1801 the right to local self-government (as Authon ).

The parish of Neuville-sur-Authou belonged to the diocese of Lisieux until 1855 , which was integrated into the diocese of Bayeux in the same year .

The municipality's coat of arms is red with silver horizontal stripes and adorned with three golden fish.

Attractions

Entrance portal of the Notre-Dame church

The Notre-Dame church was built in the second half of the 12th century; only the entrance portal and a small window in the north of the nave have survived from that time , as Romanesque elements were destroyed during renovation work. The westward portal is adorned with four columns, the capitals of which are decorated with rolled leaves. Inside the church are the tombstone of Charles de Boscherville († 1297), which was classified as a Monument historique ('historical monument') in 1907, and an 18th century painting depicting the Annunciation and by François Lemoyne (1688– 1737) or is a contemporary copy of one of his works. It was classified as a Monument historique in 1912 .

economy

The image of the community is characterized by pastures and fields. The most important line of business for the Neuvillais is agriculture . In the municipality, there are controlled designations of origin (AOC) for Calvados and Pommeau (Pommeau de Normandie) and Protected Geographical Indications (IGP) for pork (Porc de Normandie) , poultry (Volailles de Normandie) and cider (Cidre de Normandie and Cidre normand) .
