Saint-Aubin church

Authou is a French municipality with 338 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Eure in the region of Normandy .

geography

Authou is located on the eastern edge of the Lieuvin in the Risle Valley , 37 kilometers southwest of Rouen and 17 kilometers northeast of Bernay , between the neighboring communities of Pont-Authou in the northeast, Le Bec-Hellouin in the southeast and Livet-sur-Authou in the west. The nearest airport is Rouen Airport . The hamlet of La Croix Blanche belongs to the municipality and is west of the town center.

history

Authou was on the Roman road from Brionne (Breviodurum) to Le Mans (Subdinum) . In the Middle Ages there was a leprosy on site . The Authou was the name of a part of a watercourse that today is called La Croix Blanche after a leprosy near Livet-sur-Authou and in Authou it is only called le torrent (the torrent). Only after it passed Authou is it still called Authou by the population today . However, this name of the watercourse is La Croix Blanche along the entire length of the Office national de l'eau (National Water Authority) .

middle Ages

Duke Richard I of Normandy (935–996) gave his brother Raoul d'Ivry († after 1015) an area that was then called Vièvre . Authou belonged to this area. Raoul's son, Jean d'Ivry (1060-1067) was Bishop of Avranches and so these lands came into the possession of the diocese. However, the diocese did not own the entire village. William FitzOsbern, 1st Earl of Hereford (1020-1071), donated land in Authou to Le Bec Abbey in Le Bec-Hellouin in the 11th century. The parish of the village was also under the Abbey of Le Bec. Philip IV of France (1268-1314) gave Jean II. D'Harcourt (1245-1302) in 1287 the fief of Brionne. It is documented that Jean II. D'Harcourt had the seigneurial right to the Salerne mill in 1293 . Despite its name, this mill was in Authou. In that document Authou is mentioned for the first time, as Autouel .

Modern times

At the beginning of the 16th century, Jean du Bosc was Seigneur of Brétigny , Authou and Livet-sur-Authou. After an official Reformed church was established in Rouen in 1557 and in Évreux in 1559 , Authou followed suit with Brionne. The Protestant church in Authou / Brionne did not exist until the 17th century. Around 1573, Pierre de Doyen was seigneur of the village and after his death the fief became the property of the du Val family .

1793 Authou received as Auton in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality and 1801 under the current name the right to local self-government.

Attractions

The Saint-Aubin church dates from the 12th century. However, only the entrance portal has survived from that time. The rest of the church was renovated in the 13th century. The choir was rebuilt in the 15th century. The porch was added in the 16th century. The current north wall of the nave was renewed around 1785. The altar retable of the side altars , the decoration of the poutre de gloire (beams in the vault between the choir and nave) and the railing around the choir date from the 16th century and were classified as a monument historique in 1890 .

economy

Mairie Authou

Towards the end of the 19th century, a cheese factory was built in Authou, which was in operation until 1952. There was Camembert and Pont-l'Évêque made. In the hamlet of La Croix Blanche, the butter factory was located in picturesque thatched half-timbered houses that were bombed during World War II in February 1944, killing six Authoniens (residents). Today there are controlled designations of origin (AOC) for Camembert (Camembert de Normandie) , Calvados and Pommeau (Pommeau de Normandie) and Protected Geographical Indications (IGP) for pork (Porc de Normandie) , poultry (Volailles de Normandie) and cider ( Cider de Normandie and Cider normand) .

At the beginning of the 20th century there were three watermills in the municipality. At that time, a total of ten craft businesses were operated by hydropower .
