Mairie La Neuve-Lyre

La Neuve-Lyre is a French municipality with 573 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Eure in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Bernay and the Canton of Breteuil .

geography

La Neuve-Lyre is located in the southwest of the Eure department in the Pays d'Ouche on the Risle , 32 kilometers southwest of Évreux and just 1.1 kilometers south of La vielle-Lyre . To the east of the village is the large forest of Forêt de Conches . The hamlet of Chagny is part of the municipality.

history

Initially, La Neuve-Lyre was part of the village of La Vieille-Lyre. 1046 founded William FitzOsbern, 1st Earl of Hereford (1020-1071), a Benedictine abbey in La Vieille-Lyre. The deed also mentions the town, the church and the mills of Nova Lire (La Neuve-Lyre). Robert de Beaumont, 1st Earl of Leicester (1050-1118) owned a castle in Nova Lira . In 1119 Eustache de Breteuil († 1136), the son-in-law of King Henry I of England , had the castle expanded. The castle was captured by English troops in 1419.

In 1793, La Neuve-Lyre received the status of a municipality in the course of the French Revolution (1789–1799) and was the capital of a canton. In 1801 the community received the right to local self-government as La Neuve-Lire and was assigned to the canton of Rugles.

La Neuve-Lyre had the most inhabitants in 1800 (817) and least in 1999 (567).

The municipality's coat of arms is red and divided into four places ( crossing ). The first and fourth place show a silver lance tip, the second and third place a silver five-leaf . In the middle is a blue coat of arms on which a lyre is depicted. The metallic colors "gold" and "silver" are shown on the coat of arms in yellow and white.

Attractions

The Domaine de la Chapelle estate is located southwest of the town center and is partly on the site of the municipality of Neaufles-Auvergny . In the 19th century the property was acquired by an iron goods wholesaler from Ambenay . The estate includes a castle, the Château de la Chapelle , a park and several pavilions . The park was established in 1865, the current castle was built between 1876 and 1879 by the architect Jacques Baumier (1824–1886) using parts of the old castle . The whole Domaine de la Chapelle was entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques (historical monuments) in 2002 .

The nave and bell tower of the Saint-Gilles church date from the 12th century and the choir from the 13th century. The bell tower is made of grison, a stone colored reddish by iron oxides .

economy

In the 19th century there was a rolling mill , a drawing mill for brass wire and a tannery in La Neuve-Lyre . From 1866 until the first half of the 20th century, Lyre station was served by trains on the Conches  - L'Aigle line.

Today there is a cheese dairy in which Camembert of the Protected Designation of Origin ( AOC ) Camembert de Normandie is made. In addition to the protected designation of origin for Camembert, Protected Geographical Indications (IGP) for pork (Porc de Normandie) , poultry (Volailles de Normandie) and cider (Cidre de Normandie and Cidre normand) apply in the municipality .
