history

When Rollo (860–931 / 932) divided Neustria among his followers, he kept the Vièvre forest to himself. The forest reached in the 11th century from Saint-Étienne-l'Allier (4 kilometers northwest of Saint-Georges-du-Vièvre) to the Risle. Saint-Grégoire was a quart-fief de Haubert , roughly 'quartered fiefdom of the ring armor '. This form of subdivision of fiefs was common in feudalism only in Normandy and Brittany . The owner of the fiefdom automatically became a knight when he inherited the fiefdom and was 21 years old and had to serve in his master's rural army. The ring armor was the symbol of chivalry in this context. When these fiefs were inherited, they could be divided into up to eight parts. In the 13th century the fiefs of Saint-Grégoire-du-Vièvre were subordinate to the Duchy of Vendôme , from the 14th to the 16th century to the House of Bourbon , most recently King Henry IV. The fief of Saint-Grégoire was subordinate to the respective from the 16th century Bishop of Avranches or his barony of Saint-Philbert . Three other fiefdoms in Saint-Grégoire-du-Vièvre were Salle, Loges and La Noe. Salle was also a Quart-fief de Haubert and from the 16th century was also under the bishops of Avranches. The seigneur of Saint-Grégoire and Salle had the right to Low jurisdiction and the banalité on water mills . The Seigneur of Saint-Grégoire was allowed to determine the pastor of the place.

In the Ancien Régime (1589–1789) there were occasional deaths from attacks by wolves .

1793 received Saint-Grégoire-du-Vièvre in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) as Saint Gregoire the status of a municipality and 1801 as Saint-Grégoire through the administrative reform under Napoleon Bonaparte the right to local self-government .

In the 19th century a mairie and a school were built. Today these buildings are used as residential buildings. A new Mairie was built in the 1950s when the village center shifted to Départementsstrasse .
