geography

Aclou is located in the Risle Valley on the border between Lieuvin and Roumois , twelve kilometers northeast of Bernay and three kilometers southwest of the canton capital Brionne .

history

When the A28 Autoroute was built, a preventive archaeological survey was carried out at Les Fossettes , an undeveloped district of Aclou. During an excavation, holes in posts and two hearths from the Neolithic period were found , the remains of a building about 20 mx 8 m in size.

Aclou was a fiefdom of the monastery of Saint-Lô in Rouen in the 11th century , which was confirmed in a document by Henry II of England between 1171 and 1182 . In that document Aclou Arclou was mentioned .

The old mill of Aclou from the 12th century is located in a hamlet that was previously named after it. Today, however, the hamlet is called Valleville and belongs to Brionne.

In 1794, the Saint-Pierre church, also called Saint-Rémy or Saint-Rémi, was closed during the French Revolution (1789–1799) and its facility was brought to Bernay in April of the same year .
