Mairie

Bourth is a French commune with 1,255 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Eure in the region of Normandy .

geography

Bourth is 37 kilometers southwest of Évreux and about 10 kilometers southwest of Breteuil in the Pays d'Ouche in the Iton Valley on the D54 .

history

The main road from Bourth was in Gallo-Roman times (v. Chr 52nd to 486 n. Chr.) A Roman road .

Since the Norman invasion, the place has belonged to the castellany of Tillières-sur-Avre and the barony of Damville . The Count of Tillières-sur-Avre was Seigneur von Bourth until the French Revolution (1789–1799) .

Shortly after the establishment of the Saint-Sauveur Abbey of Évreux , the parish of Bourth was subordinated to it.

From the 16th century iron ore was mined in the municipality. The watermills on the Iton were converted into workshops. There were several blacksmiths in Bourth well into the 19th century. The ore mining had an eponymous effect on streets and hamlets: Rue de la Forge ('street of the forge'), Le Minerai ('the ore').

Until the 18th century there were different spellings for the place name, variants were Bourth , Bourt and Bourg . In 1793, during the French Revolution, the town received the status of a municipality as Bourth and in 1801 the right to local self-government.

During the Second World War , Bourth was bombed twelve times by the Allied Air Force during Operation Overlord in the summer of 1944 . In the last days of the occupation, the Wehrmacht executed several civilians, including three children aged 16, 11 and 9 years.
