the Notre Dame church

Notre-Dame-d'Épine is a French municipality with 81 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Eure in the region of Normandy .

geography

Notre-Dame-d'Épine is located in Lieuvin , 12 kilometers northeast of Bernay and 8 kilometers west of the canton capital Brionne , between the neighboring communities of Morsan in the south and Saint-Victor-d'Épine in the north. At Notre-Dame-d'Épine the hamlet belongs Le Bucard which is located south of the village and has no street names. The village center also has no street names and is called Le Village .

Notre-Dame-d'Épine is one of the municipalities in the Eure department where there is a risk of suddenly forming holes meters deep or deeper subsidence. The so-called Marnières are old marl pits that can open, for example, after heavy rain, when the debris is washed into the side passages. The former entry holes usually have a diameter of 1.5 to 2 meters. But the old mining corridors can also collapse. There are around 16,000 of these marl pits in the entire Eure department. There were problems with Marnières in the municipality in 1999 and 2001-2002 .

history

Notre-Dame-d'Épine was formerly also called Épine Epine or Epines . Épine is the French word for “sting”, both blackthorn and hawthorn contain the word épine in French. So there was probably a particularly large number of thorn bushes on site. The lands called Épine belonged to the barony of Saint-Philbert-sur-Risle until the 11th century .

Mairie (Town Hall)

Jean d ' Avranches (also d'Ivry or de Saint-Philibert , † 1079) the son of Raoul d'Ivry was bishop of Avranches from 1061 to 1067 and donated his lands to the church. This included Notre-Dame-d'Épine, he gave it to the Archbishop of Rouen before becoming Archbishop himself in 1067.

In 1073, the then owner Guillaume gave Giroie d'Echauffour Épine to the Saint-Léger Abbey of Les Préaux . Épine was divided into the parishes of Saint-Victor-d'Épine and Notre-Dame-d'Épine. In 1376 Jean Mauvois received Notre-Dame-d'Épine. At that time it was subordinate to La Poterie-Mathieu . In 1535, Guillaume Le Carpentier was seigneur of the municipality.

In 1712, Epines came into the possession of the Morsan branch of the Le Sens family and in 1771 Abdon Thomas Le Sens became seigneur of Notre-Dame-d'Épine. The fief belonged to the Le Sens until the French Revolution (1789–1799). In 1793, Notre-Dame-d'Épine received the status of a municipality in the course of the French Revolution and in 1801 the right to local self-government. It was renamed Épine during the Revolution .

Attractions

Crucifix in the cemetery

Notre Dame church dates back to the 16th century. Inside there is a baptismal font from the 17th century, which is embedded in the wall. In the altarpiece from the 17th century is a painting by Guy Hubert (called Timothée) from 1667, called L'Assomption ( Assumption of the Virgin ). The reredos and paintings were classified as Monuments historiques in 1907. The church also has a liter funéraire (mourning ribbon) from the 18th century on the western outer wall. There are two coats of arms of Le Sens de Morsan. One of the coats of arms is carved into a square about two feet long. The colors of the coat of arms are a bit faded. It is endowed with the crown of a marquis . Besides the fact that the Le Sens were seigneurs of Notre-Dame-d'Épine in the 18th century, the oval shape of the coat of arms speaks for this time.

In the cemetery there is a stone cross with Jesus Christ on the west side and the Virgin and Child on the east side . The crucifix was entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques in 1961 ( inscrit MH ).

economy

Notre-Dame-d'Épine is surrounded by pasture and farmland. Important branches of business are agriculture and the breeding of domestic cattle and domestic sheep . Most residents, however, work in other communities. In the municipality, there are controlled designations of origin (AOC) for Pont-l'Évêque cheese , calvados and pommeau (Pommeau de Normandie) as well as Protected Geographical Indications (IGP) for pork (Porc de Normandie) , poultry (Volailles de Normandie) and cider ( Cider de Normandie and Cider normand) .
