history

Originally, Fourques was a large town that was divided into two places, Saint-Éloi-de-Fourques and Saint-Paul-de-Fourques. Ordericus Vitalis (1075–1142) mentioned in his Historia Ecclesiastica the main town of Fourques as Furcas (fork, pitchfork, fork). Establishing the Bec Abbey in the 11th century, the family Croc gave the Abbey everything they had in Fourques. At the beginning of the 13th century, Guillaume de Fourques donated land and money to the Abbey of Le Bec. The parish church of Saint-Paul also belonged to the Abbey of Le Bec. On August 10, 1253, Roger, the pastor of Saint-Paul-de-Fourques, gave the parish to Eudes Rigaud (around 1200-1275), who was then in the Abbey of Le Bec. Henri de Saint-Léger, the abbot of Le Bec, gave the town to Robert Le Gregy, who later returned it to Robert I. de Clairbec, the successor to Henri de Saint-Léger. In 1692 the parish ran a boys' school in Saint-Paul-de-Fourques. The abbey remained in the possession of the local seigneurism until the French Revolution .

In 1793, in the course of the French Revolution, Saint-Paul-de-Fourques received the status of a municipality (as Saint Paul de Fourques) and in 1801 the right to local self-government (as Saint-Paul-de-Fourques).
