Saint-Benoît-des-Ombres is located in northern France in the Lieuvin countryside , 45 kilometers southeast of Le Havre , 16.3 kilometers northeast of Bernay , the seat of the sub-prefecture of the arrondissement , and 3.9 kilometers northeast of Saint-Georges-du- Vièvre , the capital of the canton at an average altitude of 115 meters above sea ​​level . The first stone building was erected on August 31, 1100, according to the tourist office. However, the lands of Saint-Benoît-des-Ombres had belonged to the Saint-Pierre monastery in Les Préaux since 1070 . It was not until the 13th century that the addition of the Ombres (literally 'from the shadows') appeared. Benedict of Nursia, the patron saint of the church and the place, was born in the Italian region of Umbria , called Ombrie in French .

In 1793, Saint-Benoît-des-Ombres received the status of a municipality in the wake of the French Revolution (1789-1799) and in 1801 the right to local self-government through the administrative reform under Napoleon Bonaparte .

On June 8, 1944, however, the Maquis had to give up the farm because the Wehrmacht first fired mortars at La Pilvedière and then occupied it. On August 24, 1944, the community was liberated by the British 7th Armored Division .

Saint-Benoît-des-Ombres belongs to the Roman Catholic community Communauté de Saint Georges du Vièvre , which is part of the Montgeoly parish of the Diocese of Évreux . The oldest surviving components of the Saint-Benoît church are the choir and the north wall of the nave from the 12th century. The south wall and entrance area were renewed in the 16th century. The sacristy was renewed in the 19th century. The church tower was damaged by fire in 1979 and restored shortly afterwards. On March 21st every year, believers make a pilgrimage to this statue, to which ribbons are still tied or notes and photographs are deposited, in order to plead for the protection of Benedict against malevolent people. During the mass on March 21, the faithful receive consecrated yew branches that are supposed to protect the house or stable. The Mass for Lawrence of Rome takes place on August 10th. He is called to heal skin diseases. All year round, believers leave little notes under the head of a high relief from the 15th century, which depicts the saint lying in the oven on the flames. The high relief was classified as a historical monument in 1927. Other listed works of art are a sculpture of the Madonna and Child and the baptismal font , both of which were made in the 16th century. The wooden statue of Saint Benedict in the porch is 1.6 meters high and was made in the 17th century.

In Lieu-dit La Petite-Boissière there is a manor house from the 17th century that was restored in the 20th century. It is privately owned.

The Mairie is one of the smallest in France and was built in 1905.
