history

The place name developed from the Middle Latin word Fraxinosa for 'place where ash trees grow'. Freneuse was first mentioned in 1164 as Frainosa in the copial book of the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Pierre de Préaux in Les Préaux .

Duke Richard I of Normandy (935–996) gave his brother Raoul d'Ivry († after 1015) a forest area that was then called Vièvre in French or Foresta Guevra in Middle Latin (1066). In the 11th century, Saint-Étienne-l'Allier (4 kilometers northwest of Saint-Georges-du-Vièvre ) was the north-western corner , Authou the south-eastern corner. The area extended to the Risle. Freneuse-sur-Risle was one of them. Raoul's son, Jean d'Ivry (1060-1067) was Bishop of Avranches and so these lands came into the possession of the diocese, which also held the church patronage .

The diocese awarded fiefs in Freneuse. Seigneur of the fiefdom of Freneuse was Raoul de Freneuse in 1164. In 1198 the fief came into the possession of the king. At that time, the Seigneur was Jean de Freneuse, a son of Raoul. The fiefdom of Freneuse was converted into a so -called demifief de Haubert , roughly 'halved fiefdom of the ring armor '. This form of subdivision of fiefs was common in feudalism only in Normandy and Brittany . The owner of the fiefdom automatically became a knight when he inherited the fiefdom and was 21 years old and had to serve in his master's rural army. The ring armor was the symbol of chivalry in this context. When these fiefs were inherited, they could be divided into up to eight parts. The seigneur of a half-hen was a half-knight, which meant that he only had to perform half of the normal service for the king for knights. Around 1202 the fief came into the possession of the La Mare-Gouvis family from Sainte-Opportune-la-Mare through marriage . Around 1210, King Philip II gave the Freneuse fief to Robert II d'Harcourt . His grandson Jean I. d'Harcourt (around 1198 to 1288) was in 1250 with the Bishop of Avranches in legal dispute over blood jurisdiction in Freneuse. The bishop won. Around 1541 the fiefdom belonged to Louise de Bourbon-Montpensier (1482–1561), the Duchess of Montpensier . It was now a quarter marriage from the barony of Saint-Philbert-sur-Risle .

The fiefdom of Vieuville in Lieu-dit ('place that is named.') Les Coudraies was first mentioned in 1596.

Jean-Laurent Le Cerf de La Viéville (1674-1707) was Seigneur of Freneuse or Vieuville and keeper of the seal of the Parliament of Normandy in Rouen . He wrote musicological articles for the Journal de Trévoux .

In the Ancien Régime , the pastors in the Eure département led a simple life. The pastor of Freneuse-sur-Risle, however, was wealthier than the average when he was expropriated in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799).
