La Neuville-du-Bosc is a French municipality with 652 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Eure in the region of Normandy .

geography

Geographical location

La Neuville-du-Bosc is located in the Forêt du Neubourg (Forest of Neubourg) 17 kilometers southwest of Elbeuf , 3.2 kilometers northeast of Harcourt and 4 kilometers northwest of Le Champ de Bataille Castle .

geology

La Neuville-du-Bosc is one of the communities in the Eure department where there is a risk of holes being suddenly formed several meters deep. The so-called Marnières are old marl pits that have been poorly filled with rubble. They can open after heavy rain, when the debris filling is washed into the side passages. These holes usually have a diameter of 1.5 to 2 meters. There are around 16,000 of these marl pits in the entire Eure department. There have been floods in the past, which are related to the special nature of the clayey soil.

There were also limestone quarries on site. Limestone blocks were burned in lime kilns . There is a risk of old quarries collapsing, creating cylindrical cavities several meters deep.

history

Traces of settlement from prehistoric times were found in the forest ( Forêt de Sainte Vaubourg ) near La Neuville-du-Bosc in 1841 . Two flint axes from the Neolithic Age and five large axes that were cast in different shapes, as well as various casting forms from the Bronze Age, were discovered.

La Neuville-du-Bosc is mentioned for the first time in 1050 in a document from the Count of Brionne . The boundaries of the parish were established in 1281 by the Bishop of Évreux.

The tithe barn La Grange de Canteloup from the 13th century was dismantled from 1967 to 1969 and used to rebuild the abbey church of Saint-Wandrille Abbey .

La Neuville-du-Bosc is represented with two flowers in the Conseil national des villes et villages fleuris (National Council of Flowered Cities and Villages). The "flowers" are awarded in the course of a regional competition, whereby a maximum of three flowers can be achieved.

In the center of the community there is a village pond next to the church with its large yew tree.

Buildings

The remains of the Manoir de Sainte Vaubourg, a hunting lodge and chapel that belonged to the Seigneurs of Le Neubourg and was dedicated to Saint Walburga , are in the forest of Neubourg. It is a Norman porch , the chapel and a draw well . Next to the well there was an oak tree dedicated to Saint Barbara of Nicomedia . Believers scraped some bark from the tree, mixed it with well water and drank it as a remedy for fever. The Romanesque chapel was enlarged in the 12th and 13th centuries. At that time it was a place of pilgrimage dedicated to Agapitus of Praeneste .

The Sainte-Catherine church dates back to the 14th century and was rebuilt in the 16th century. It houses a Pietà from the 15th century and a portrait of Mary from the 16th century. There is a coat of arms on the south facade.

Economy and Infrastructure

Sainte-Catherine church

In the 19th century there was a weaving mill in La Neuville-du-Bosc. Today agriculture is the most important industry. Protected Geographical Indications (IGP) apply to pork (Porc de Normandie) , poultry (Volailles de Normandie) and cider (Cidre de Normandie and Cidre normand) in the municipality .

The former train station between Harcourt and La Neuville-du-Bosc belonged to a railway line that ran from Glos-sur-Risle (Glos-Montfort train station) to Évreux since the end of the 19th century . Passenger trains stopped at the station five times a day and once a day a freight train drove from La Neuville-du-Bosc, transporting gravel from the community's gravel pits, liqueur, Calvados apples and beets. The railway line was closed in 1970 and later paved. Today it is used as a bicycle and hiking trail.

education

In 1973 a free school was founded in La Neuville-du-Bosc, the École de Neuville . In 1982 the school left the parish, but kept the name.
