history

The place name appears for the first time in a Latinized version in 1164 as Sanctus Georgius de Wevra . The place name part Vièvre referred to a large forest ( foresta Guevra 1066) in the Middle Ages , which reached in the 11th century from Saint-Étienne-l'Allier (4 kilometers northwest of Saint-Georges-du-Vièvre) to the Risle . According to legend, St. George killed a dragon of the type Wyvern . Vouivre , the French word for wyvern, is said to have been the original name of the forest in which, according to legend, a dragon lived that ate the small children of the area. It is also possible that Vièvre is of pre-Latin origin.

In the 12th century, the seigneur donated the Le Mont-Roti fiefdom to the Abbey of Le Bec . The Seigneurie La Poterie-Mathieu owned lands in Saint-Georges-du-Vièvre and several other localities. Saint-Georges-du-Vièvre itself was the seat of the fiefs of Le Manoir , La Graffonnière , Launay and Bonnemare . La Graffonière was a castle in the 16th century, today it is a homestead. The Launay fiefdom was owned by the noble family Le Sens de Folleville from 1482 to 1812 .

Maquis Surcouf

Saint-Georges-du-Vièvre was the center of the Maquis Surcouf resistance movement during World War II (1939–1945) . The Maquis Surcouf operated in the area between the Marais-Vernier (Eure) in the north-west, Bernay in the south-east, Cormeilles in the south-west and Bourgtheroulde-Infreville in the north-east. On June 8, 1944, the Germans arrested several residents in Saint-Georges-du-Vièvre, including four gendarmes who were deported to Germany and never returned. The following night a group of the Maquis was caught by a German patrol . There was a skirmish at Départementsstrasse 29 near a sawmill. Three German soldiers and a maquisard were killed. As a result, the owner of the sawmill and his nephew were shot by the Germans. Flavien Feuillye was on the road that night as a messenger between the units of the Maquis ; he met a German patrol on the southern edge of the municipality in the lieu-dit ('place that is named ..') la Côte Maridor . He was arrested and searched. He had neither weapons nor identification papers with him. The head of the anti-terrorist unit of the police of Rouen was there and Feuillye recognized as a Maquisard he had arrested on 12 January 1944, and the ten days was freed later. As a result, Feuillye was shot at the entrance to the town on the D 29.

The mountain Mont Rôti was used by the Germans as a lookout point . From Mont Rôti you can see the Seine and Le Havre on a clear day . The observation tower was destroyed twice by the Maquis Surcouf , in September 1943 and on June 6, 1944.

The Saint-Georges church
The dovecote of Launay Castle

The Saint-Georges church is dedicated to Saint George. The square choir dates from the 13th century and is higher than the nave , which was newly built in the 18th century . The west facade dates from the 16th century. Signs against witchcraft are carved on the outer wall . The bell tower dates from the 12th century, but one floor was added in the 19th century. The church windows show Saint George slaying a dragon . A fountain was discovered in the church during renovation work in the choir. A statue from the 14th century on a pedestal from the 15th century depicts Mary with the child . Mary's shoes, which are depicted as chaussures à la poulaine , are particularly interesting .

Launay Castle was built for the Le Sens de Folleville family in the 16th century . The stables and the octagonal pigeon house have been preserved from that time . The current main building in Regency style was built around 1720. It is made of white stones and is two stories high. The roof is covered with slate . The rooms on the ground floor with oak paneling in Rococo style lined, hunting and gardening are shown on the scenes of music. The dovecote is a half-timbered house , whose cleats with grotesque heads are decorated. In addition to the grimaces, the coats of arms of Isaac Le Sens and Jeanne de Pierrepont, who married in 1504, are shown. In 1810 Robert-François le Sens sold the castle and its furnishings, including the family portraits, to Pierre Naguet de Saint-Vulfran, whose heirs owned the castle until 1918. The castle is privately owned, the owner had the pigeon house dismantled, restored in Caen and rebuilt. Château de Launay is not a rare name for a castle in France, there are castles of the same name in La Chapelle-Réanville and in Villiers-le-Mahieu ( Launay Castle ).

Front of Launay Castle

The baroque garden and the small park of Launay Castle were established in the 18th century. Among other things , the park houses a hanging beech that was planted in 1730 and is considered the oldest hanging beech in France. The castle and the garden are officially classified as a historical monument as well as a natural and cultural monument.

Saint-Georges-du-Vièvre has a public swimming pool , two tennis courts, a public boules court and a riding school . The swimming pool is open from the beginning of July to the end of August and is heated with solar power .

Economy and Infrastructure

From the 16th to the 18th century, Saint-Georges-du-Vièvre was known for the manufacture of fine linen fabrics . The linen was made at home and sold in an open market hall . When the first textile factories opened in the Risle valley , home work was stopped. The market hall was demolished in 1930.

In the meantime tourism has gained in importance, there is a hotel with a restaurant , a campsite , several country inns and chambre d'hôtes . The 2008 census showed the following results regarding the labor market: Unemployment was 12.9 percent. 24.6 percent of the working population are employed in the municipality, the rest are commuters.

In the municipality, there are controlled designations of origin (AOC) for Pont-l'Évêque cheese , calvados and pommeau (Pommeau de Normandie) as well as Protected Geographical Indications (IGP) for pork (Porc de Normandie) , poultry (Volailles de Normandie) and cider ( Cider de Normandie and Cider normand) .
