Saint-Jean-de-la- Léqueraye is a village and a former French municipality with 66 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Eure in the region of Normandy . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Bernay and the Canton of Beuzeville .

With effect from January 1, 2019, the former municipalities of Saint-Georges-du-Mesnil and Saint-Jean-de-la-Léqueraye were merged to form the Commune nouvelle Le Mesnil-Saint-Jean and have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are located in Saint-Georges-du-Mesnil .

Saint-Jean-de-la-Léqueraye is located in northern France in the Lieuvin countryside , 42 kilometers southeast of Le Havre , about 16 kilometers northwest of Bernay , the seat of the sub-prefecture of the Arrondissements, and 2.7 kilometers southwest of Saint-Georges-du -Vièvre , the capital of the canton at an average altitude of 143 meters above sea ​​level . Neighboring towns of Saint-Jean-de-la-Léqueraye are La Poterie-Mathieu in the northwest, Saint-Georges-du-Vièvre in the northeast, Saint-Victor-d'Épine in the southeast and Saint-Georges-du-Mesnil in the south. The La Croix Blanche stream flows through the area.

In Saint-Jean-de-la-Léqueraye, there is a risk of holes that are meters deep in the ground. The so-called Marnières are old marl pits that can open, for example, after heavy rain, when the debris is washed into the side passages. On average, there are around 15 underground cavities in the Eure department, especially marl pits and infiltration areas per square kilometer. In Saint-Jean-de-la-Léqueraye there are a total of thirty underground cavities, two of which are marl pits and one cavity is of karst origin.

history

Saint-Jean-de-la-Léqueraye was first mentioned in the 13th century under the names Laschereia and Lesquereia . In 1376 the village was named S. Jean de la Lesqueraie . At Saint Jean is John the Baptist . According to Walther von Wartburg , Laschereia arose from a dialect word that means 'swamp meadow'.

In the Ancien Régime there were three small fiefdoms in addition to the main fiefdom: Laudière, Le Bois Louvet and Beaupotier. Three other fiefdoms with headquarters in other localities had properties in Saint-Jean-de-la-Léqueraye: La Graffionaire, Launay (in Saint-Georges-du-Vièvre) and La Fortière (in Épreville-en-Lieuvin ).

In 1793, Saint-Jean-de-la-Léqueraye received the status of a municipality in the course of the French Revolution (1789–1799) and in 1801 under the name Saint-Jean through the administrative reform under Napoleon Bonaparte, the right to local self-government .

In the first half of the 19th century, the parish church was destroyed. Since then the parish no longer has a parish church. An original church is said to have existed as early as the 11th century. The parish priest was elected by the Lisieux diocese .

Culture and sights

17th century pigeon house

The fiefdom of Le Bois Louvet was first mentioned in 1190, i.e. before Saint-Jean-de-la-Léqueraye. The pigeon house was built in the 17th century, the main building and the barn in the 18th century, and the bread oven in the 19th century.

The fief of L'Audière was first mentioned in a document in 1698. Residential and agricultural buildings date from the 17th century.

Local products

The town has controlled designations of origin (AOC) for Pont-l'Évêque cheese , Calvados and Pommeau de Normandie, as well as Protected Geographical Indications (IGP) for pork (Porc de Normandie) , poultry (Volailles de Normandie) and cider (Cidre de Normandie and cider normand) .

Ice cream is produced on the former feudal farm Le Bois Louvet . In addition to the normal flavors, there are also regional specialties, such as calvadoseis or Pont-l'Évêque ice cream.
