history

The place name was derived from the Latin name Magna vallis , "great valley". This described the difference between Menneval and Valailles. Because Valailles is derived from Valliculae , "small valleys". The name Manavilla can be found on a document from the time of Charles the Bald (823-877). The deed concerns properties belonging to the Abbey of St-Ouen de Rouen . In a later document, which concerns a donation by Judith de Bretagne (982-1017) to the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Bernay , Menneval is mentioned as Manneval . After the death of Mathieu de Varennes, the de Bréauté family came into possession of the village through marriage in the 14th century. Roger III de Bréauté, Seigneur of Néville and Menneval, was chamberlain to Charles VI. (1368-1422) and Charles VII (1403-1461). With the siege of Harfleur he got into financial difficulties. He had to pay ransom to the English. So in 1413 he sold Menneval, his estates in Bernay and other localities in the area to Jean VII. D'Harcourt . However, he reserved the right of repurchase. Two years later the king claimed the sold lands for himself. Menneval became part of the domaine royal . Henry V (1387–1422) also claimed Menneval for himself during his invasion of Normandy . Heinrich II. (1519–1559) sold Menneval again. In 1648 Claude d'Erneville became seigneur of Menneval. He increased his property by buying land. The later owner Louis-Jacques Grossin de Bouville (1759-1838) lived in his castle in Rouen and gave Menneval to his sister, who in 1781 married Pierre-Alexandre Dauger. Dauger was Chairman of the General Council of Eure at the time of the Restoration .

Before the French Revolution (1789-1799), Menneval was the seat of a seigneurial court, which had the highest rights ( Justice haute ), so it could also pass death sentences.

In 1793, during the French Revolution, Menneval received the status of a municipality as Maneval and in 1801 the right to local self-government .

In the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871), Menneval was captured by German troops on January 22, 1871. Some residents had holed up in Menneval Castle and defended themselves. But they withdrew into the forest when the German commander threatened to burn down the whole of Menneval. Two French were killed. On January 31, the German occupiers demanded a tax of 475 francs . The armistice, signed on January 28, 1871, was not made public until February 4.

In the 18th century, Pierre-Alexandre Dauger had the castle modernized, a wing extended and numerous new windows installed. A 17th century chapel dedicated to Saint Leonard of Limoges was demolished in 1820 by Frédéric Dauger and replaced by stables. He also had the main building enlarged and a third wing built. Amédé Dauger had the south facade renewed in 1860 and added a new chapel in neo-Gothic style to the building . In 1910 the grand staircase was renewed and the salons restored.
