history

Some place names in Normandy go back to the time of the Viking invasion in the 10th century. This also includes Routot . These place names are usually composed of a Scandinavian first name and a word that describes the type of the populated area. It has also happened that estates were taken over by other local landowners. So it is not always about start-ups. Routot originated from terre de Hrólfr ('Land of Rolf'), but it is probably a re-establishment by Vikings.

In the 12th century, Routot was part of the dowry of a woman from the Meulan family when she married the then Seigneur of Montfort-sur-Risle . The village was mentioned in a document from Le Bec Abbey. 1298 was Routot part of the prerogative of Philip IV. For his brother Louis (1276-1319). In 1310 Routot belonged to the county of Beaumont , which was named Apanage Robert III. (1287-1342). After the death of Robert III. the county fell back to the crown.

In the 15th century the village belonged to the Harcourt family . Their reign was interrupted in the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) by the campaign of the English King Henry V (1387-1422) against France. With the marriage of Marie d'Harcourt to Antoine de Lorraine , Count of Vaudémont , Routot was incorporated into the county of Vaudémont .

In the Ancien Régime (from the end of the 16th century to the French Revolution (1789–1799)), when the local seigneur had market rights, Routot was a barony and, in addition to the weekly market, held two large cattle markets a year based on the trade of Cattle were specialized. The animals were not raised in the region and were mostly sold in the Paris region, which means that buyers and sellers came from far away.

In 1793, in the course of the French Revolution, Routot received the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government through the administrative reform under Napoleon Bonaparte .

During the Franco-Prussian War Routot was occupied by Prussian troops.

In the Second World War (1939-1945) there was a subgroup of the Maquis Surcouf in Routot. In August 1944, the resistance fighters changed the street signs and erected barricades on the streets to hinder and mislead the fleeing Germans. On August 28, 1944, the British 1st RTR reached the municipality and approached the center through the hamlets to the north . In the afternoon the 1st RTR was replaced by the British 56th Infantry Brigade. In the evening the British 187th Field Ambulance went into position not far from the Mairie and set up its field hospital there. Together with units of the Forces françaises de l'intérieur , ambulances collected the wounded on the front between La Haye-Aubrée and Hauville . At the place where the field hospital stood, a stele was later erected in memory of the victims among the liberators .

The Ouen of Rouen consecrated church was built in the years 1125-1175. The blind arcades of the choir , part of the nave and the church tower date from that time. The nave was extended in the 14th century. The late Gothic entrance portal was designed towards the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century . The windows in the nave were enlarged in the 17th century. The steeple was classified as a Monument historique ('historical monument') in 1910 . It is considered to be one of the most beautiful church towers in the Roumois .

The oldest surviving choir stalls in the church were made around 1560. The eight misericords - four on each side of the choir - depict scenes from the everyday life of certain professions. In 1861, the remains of a liter funéraire were discovered in the choir . In 1907 the Misericordien were classified as a historical monument.
