history
Until the 19th century
The place was first mentioned in 1274. In that year Friedrich von Staufeneck sold all of his goods in Wangen and Oberwälden to the Adelberg Monastery . Württemberg had already had rights in Wangen since 1327, but most of the town still belonged to the monastery.
In 1806 the Degenfeld rulership of Rechberghausen and the Adelberg monastery administration were abolished and incorporated into the Göppingen regional administration , the predecessor of the Göppingen district.
Religions
In terms of the church, Oberwälden was initially significant: a church was mentioned there as early as 1187. Later it is called Nikolauskirche . The patrons were the von Staufeneck , which then came to the Adelberg monastery as well as Ahelfingen and Zillenhart . Oberwälden formed its own parish until the end of 2019. It is now called the Evangelical Church Community of Wangen-Oberwälden . After Wangen was initially a branch of the Oberhofenkirche Göppingen , a Protestant parish was set up in the course of the Reformation in 1557 , but it was provided from Oberwälden until 1967.
Since the Reformation there has been no Roman Catholic parish in the area; the Catholic faithful are looked after by the Rechberghausen community. There is also a small Evangelical Methodist congregation in Wangen .
Incorporations
In 1935 the Niederwälden settlement was changed from Holzhausen to Wangen. As part of the community reform in Baden-Württemberg, the previously independent community of Oberwälden was incorporated on July 1, 1971.

Buildings
In the Oberwälden district there is the Protestant St. Nicholas Church with a square choir tower from the Staufer period around 1200. In the Romanesque choir there is an almost completely preserved cycle of early Gothic wall paintings, which are dated to the first third of the 14th century. The paintings in the base area and on the south wall, where a three-part Renaissance window was broken out in 1450, are no longer preserved. The depiction of the evangelists in the vault is unusual for the time: they have wings, their attributes are depicted in the form of a scroll. At their feet sits a prophet on the left and a pagan seer, a sibyl, on the right . The north wall shows a cycle of Mary with the coronation of Mary. The church patron, St. Nicholas, can also be found here with a scene of rescue from distress at sea. The east wall is the highlight of the choir painting with a representation of Jonah , Christ as the Man of Sorrows and a representation of the Madonna in a protective cloak , who is one of the oldest in Swabia. Opposite the nave, the parable of the clever and foolish virgins is depicted on the mighty choir arch. The program and style of the paintings are called Swabian Sea . After the Reformation, the frescoes were whitewashed by order of Duke Ulrich (around 1540). It was not until 1909 that they were rediscovered during the church renovation by the architect Richard Böklen and restored for the first time.
A Barbara chapel in Wangen was closed in 1535. Today's Evangelical Church in Wangen was built in 1887/88 in the neo-Gothic brick style by the architect Theophil Frey instead of the late-Gothic church, which was expanded in 1682, and has a wooden barrel vault and is richly ornamented. The stained glass in the choir window and rosette (resurrection of Christ, sacrificial lamb, ornaments) comes from the Munich workshop of Franz Xaver Zettler . In 1977 the church was renovated.
