Franz Xaver Zettler (born August 21, 1841 in Munich ; † March 27, 1916 there ) was a German draftsman and glass painter . In 1871 he founded the “Institute for Church Glass Painting” in Munich, which was later elevated to royal court glass painting.

family

Zettler was married to Therese Mayer (1843–1905), a daughter of Joseph Gabriel Mayer (1808–1883), the founder of the Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt . The eldest son

  • Franz Zettler (1865–1949) received his artistic training from Carl Johann Becker-Gundahl and Hermann Junker. In his father's company he learned all the techniques of glass painting. For further artistic training he went on extensive study trips and founded branches of the company in New York and Rome, which he took over as artistic director in 1891. In 1905, while his father was still alive, he was given the management of the company. His younger brother
  • Oskar Zettler (* 1873) received his training in Venice. In 1895 he entered his father's business and took over the artistic direction of the American branch. From 1905 to 1929 he managed the entire company with his older brother Franz Zettler. In 1930 he founded a branch in New York, where he settled in 1934 and also worked as a carton and landscape painter. His son of the same name
  • Oskar Zettler jun. (1902–1991) became artistic director of the Munich company.

Life

Zettler initially worked as a businessman. Because of his great artistic inclinations and interest in art history, he educated himself in these areas. He became an employee of the Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt in Munich, where he soon became part of the company's management. After the abolition of the Royal Glass Painting Institute in Munich, he went into business for himself in 1871 and founded the "Institute for Church Glass Painting". Through his efforts to apply the principles of the heyday of medieval glass painting again, he received numerous orders from home and abroad. Because of its great artistic and economic success, Ludwig II gave the company the title of "Royal Bavarian Court Glass Painting" in 1873 and awarded it the Order of Michael . As further awards he received the Austrian Franz Joseph Order , the Prussian Order of the Crown , the Order of the Italian Crown and the Star of Romania .

In 1909 his sons Franz and Oskar Zettler took over the company.
