Hedwigia ciliata , with translucent tips that pull down on the leaf margin .

Hedwigia ciliata is a deciduous moss that is not infrequently found in Central Europe on lime-free rock, where it is conspicuous due to its whitish-green color when wet. It was developed by the members of the Bryological-Lichenological Working Group for Central Europe e. V. (BLAM) voted Moss of the Year 2014.

description

The irregularly branched moss often forms extensive lawns. The stems, which can be up to 10 cm long, grow more or less upright at the shoot tips and are then up to 3 cm high.

When dry, the leaves are more or less close to the stem, when wet they are rather sparsely protruding , often a little one-sided. They are somewhat hollow, without ribs, elongated in shape, and drawn out in a translucent ( hyaline ) point at the front . This is serrated, while the rest of the leaf margin is smooth. The hyaline part of the leaf often pulls down a little on the leaf margin. It gives the moss a pale or whitish-green color when it is moist, and a gray color when it is dry.

The cells of the leaf blade are irregularly thick-walled, rounded and covered with often branched papillae in the upper part . They are longer and pitted towards the base of the leaf.

The spherical capsule is almost sessile and therefore sunk into the leaves. It does not have a peristome , but has a conical, cap-shaped kalyptra .

Distribution and location requirements

The species grows in more or less exposed places on lime-free rock, especially on silicate rock, as well as in not too sunny places on rubble heaps.

It is almost cosmopolitan . In Central Europe you can find them quite frequently in the mountains and the low mountain ranges, in the meantime less often in the lowlands.

Systematics

There are two varieties:

  • var. ciliata (Hedw.) Ehrh. ex P. Beauv .: The hyaline part of the leaves only accounts for up to 33% of the leaf length. It is only papilla at the base. When dry, it is gray-white in color and does not contrast strongly with the rest of the leaf.
  • var. leucophaea (Hedw.) Ehrh. ex P. Beauv .: The hyaline part of the leaves make up to 55% or 65% of the leaf length and is clearly papilous except for the tip. When dry it is pure white and forms a strong contrast to the rest of the leaf.

Recently the species Hedwigia stellata Hedenäs has been separated from this species. It differs from Hedwigia ciliata s. st. through the curved back glass hairs and the leaf cells, which have only one or two papillae (1–4 papillae in Hedwigia ciliata see str.). It seems doubtful whether the species status for H. stellata will be retained.
