Hans Martin Jahns

Hans Martin Jahns (born June 3, 1941 in Holzminden ; † November 5, 2017 in Bad Homburg ) was a German biologist and a specialist in the morphology , development , ecology and systematics of lichens . He was best known for his book Farne , Moose , Lichen , first published in 1980 and translated into numerous European languages. His botanical-mycological author's abbreviation is Jahns .

Hans Martin Jahns studied biology at the Philipps University of Marburg from 1960 to 1967 , where he completed the first phase of his training with the acquisition of a doctorate through a dissertation on studies on the history of the development of the Cladoniaceen . He then moved to the Netherlands , where he worked at the Botanical Institute of the University of Groningen , most recently as managing director. In 1973 he switched to a botany professorship at the University of Frankfurt am Main , where he completed his habilitation in 1975 . In 1987 Jahns was appointed to the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . Jahns researched and taught in Düsseldorf until his retirement in 2006, where he was managing director of the Botanical Institute and director of the Düsseldorf Botanical Garden .

(Henssen & Jahns, 1974) was considered a milestone in the developmental morphology of lichens and received the highest recognition in specialist circles around the world. His book Farne, Moose, Flechten (Jahns, 1980) has been translated into many languages ​​and, with its excellent photos, represented a forerunner of today's popular science guides. "

Hans Martin Jahns was married to the historian Sigrid Jahns .
