Wolfram Lobin

Wolfram Lobin (born June 12, 1951 in Bad Münder am Deister ) is a German botanist . From 1987 to 2016, Lobin was curator of the Botanical Garden of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . He is a specialist in island flora, especially flora and vegetation of the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Cape Verde Islands. Another focus of his work is the role of botanical gardens for biodiversity conservation and the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (Convention on the Biological Diversity, CBD).

Life

Wolfram Lobin attended high school in Hanau and after graduating from high school (1970) studied biology with a minor in biochemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt . In 1974 he moved to the Georg-August University in Göttingen . He graduated from Darmstadt in 1977 . From 1977 to 1978 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Nature Conservation in Darmstadt. In 1978, under the guidance of Focko Weberling , Ulm University and Hans Joachim Conert, Senckenbergmuseum Frankfurt , he began his research on the flora of the Cape Verde Islands as a doctoral student and employee in the Botanical-Paleobotanical Department at the Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt am Main . He received his doctorate in 1982 with the thesis "Investigation of flora, vegetation and biogeographical relationships of the Cape Verde Islands". From 1982 to 1988, Lobin was a research associate in the DFG project "Biogeographical Position of the Cape Verde Islands". As part of these activities, he undertook numerous research or study trips to the Cape Verde Islands, the Canary Islands , Greece , Morocco , Spain , England ( Kew ), France and Italy. As curator of the Botanical Gardens of the Rheinische Friedrichs-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn, further research trips and excursions took him to Madeira , Mallorca , Lake Garda, South Africa, Somalia , Chile ( Easter Island ), Georgia and Angola.

Wolfram Lobin is the son of the journalist and writer Gerd Lobin and his wife Eva, nee. Yew trees.

Norbert Kilian and Teresa Leyen 1994. a newly discovered Strandfliederart from the Cape Verde Islands in honor of Lobin as Limonium lobinii N. Kilian & Leyen.

In 2017 Tim Böhnert and Maximilian Weigend described a newly discovered species of the genus Brunellia ( Brunelliaceae ) from Kañaris in the north of Peru ( Brunellia lobinii Böhnert & Weigend) in honor of Wolfram Lobin.
