The Pretty Golden Hair Moss ( Orthotrichum pulchellum ) is a species of moss from the genus Orthotrichum . It was declared moss of the year 2008 by the bryological-lichenological working group for Central Europe .
features
Orthotrichum pulchellum grows in cushions approximately 4–6 mm high. Its leaves are long, finely pointed and curled when dry. The leaf margins are flat in the upper part, but otherwise bent. The fruit capsules that form in spring have 8 stripes and are located on approximately 1–1.4 mm long sets . Around April / May Orthotrichum pulchellum loses its kalyptra and the orange-red capsule teeth become visible. In general, golden hair mosses are difficult to distinguish from one another. The species can only be differentiated through microscopic features, such as the capsule teeth.
Occurrence
The distribution area of Orthotrichum pulchellum in Central Europe is on the coasts of the North and Baltic Seas . It lives there as an epiphyte on the bark of living trees. In general, golden haired mosses like to colonize rocks and bark. In 1855 finds were made in Bielefeld and in 1861 in East Westphalia , which then disappeared. The species was rediscovered in the Weser Uplands in 2001. In recent years finds have been mapped again inland, which is attributed to the improvement in air quality.
