Pyotr Masherov ( Russian Пётр Миронович Машеров , Belarusian Пётр Міронавіч Машэраў * February 13 . Jul / 26. February  1918 greg. In Schyrki; † 4. October 1980 in Minsk ), the Chairman of was the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Byelorussian SSR .

He was considered a liberal and popular member of the leadership and had been a hero of socialist work since 1978 .

biography

Between 1942 and 1944 he led a group of Soviet partisans on Belarusian territory and received the title Hero of the Soviet Union in August 1944 .

In March 1965, Masherov became First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus, and in 1966 a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. During his tenure as chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the BSSR, an intensive Russification of the Belarusian population took place, which is still having an impact today.

Pyotr Mascherow was killed in a car accident in Minsk .

Several streets and institutions in Belarus today bear his name, including the Vitebsk State Masherov University . A bronze bust was erected in Vitebsk in honor of Mascherov .
