Degenfeld , later also Degenfeld-Schonburg, is the name of a noble family that has been given feudal rights in Baden and Württemberg since the 13th century . The family split into the Degenfeld-Neuhaus and Degenfeld-Eybach lines in the late 16th century. The Eybach line has been called Degenfeld-Schonburg since the early 18th century and split into four lines around 1800. The Neuhaus line died out in the male line in 1921.

history

Degenfeld near Schwäbisch Gmünd was the family seat. The castle on the mountain spur above the village has gone off.
Eybach Castle , family-owned from the 16th century until today, rebuilt from 1766

The first written mentions were those of Ulricus de Degenfeld, miles (= knight) and in 1281 that of Conrad von Degenfeld. This was the guardian of Johann , Duke of Swabia and son of King Rudolf I , and established the ancestral seat, Degenfeld Castle , in the place of the same name Degenfeld near Schwäbisch Gmünd. The family line begins with Conradin von Degenfeld, dead in 1360. The family belonged to the Swabian Imperial Knighthood , cantons Kocher and Kraichgau .

From 1456 the Hoheneybach Castle near Eybach (today part of Geislingen an der Steige ) was the family headquarters. In the middle of the 16th century, Eybach Castle was also added. The castle has declined over the centuries while the castle has been maintained and renovated as the family headquarters after the Thirty Years War.

In 1580, Landhofmeister Christoph von Degenfeld († 1604) acquired Neuhaus Castle near Ehrstädt . In 1594 the castle was demolished and in 1596/97 Neuhaus Castle was built on the same site . The headquarters of Schloss Degenfeld in Gmünd , on the other hand, was sold to Duke Friedrich I of Württemberg in 1597 for 17,500 thalers .

Christoph Degenfeld's son Johann Christoph founded the Neuhaus line at Neuhaus Castle , which was owned in Ehrstädt, Waibstadt , Unterbiegelhof , Eulenhof and Wagenbach . In the 18th century, ownership of the line was temporarily split into five parts, the owners of which were divided among themselves. Johann Christoph's great-great-grandson Christoph Ferdinand I reunited the property in 1760, but also fueled the long-standing resentment of his subjects, which could only be resolved later by his three sons who ruled the condominium . His son Christoph Ferdinand III. Ehrstädt Castle was built in 1769 . The Neuhaus line represented high military personnel from Baden, especially in the 19th century, but died out in the male line in 1921. Their property came to the von Gemmingen (Neuhaus) and Thumb von Neuburg (Ehrstädt) families through marriage and inheritance . In Sinsheim-Ehrstädt, Von-Degenfeld-Straße is a reminder of the former local lords.

Landhofmeister Christoph's younger son Konrad von Degenfeld continued the Eybach line , but was stabbed to death on October 10, 1600 in Geradstetten by Schorndorfer Obervogt Jakob von Validlingen. The deed entered many chronicles and the song collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn . Konrad von Degenfeld left four sons: Konrad, Christoph Wilhelm, Christoph Wolfgang and Christoph Martin, the latter being less than a year old when his father died.

In 1625 Christoph Martin von Degenfeld , who made a name for himself as a general in Swedish, French and Venetian services, as well as his brother Christoph Wolfgang and their cousin Christoph Jacob of the Neuhauser line were elevated to the baron status. Christoph Martin's son Maximilian, Freiherr and Panierherr auf Hohen-Eybach, Palatinate secret council, (1645–1697) died as the only one of natural causes and left two sons: Phillipp August and Christoph Martin II. (1689–1762).

The daughter of Christoph Martin II, Marie Luise von Degenfeld (1634–1677) became the second wife of Elector Karl I Ludwig . She waived all claims of the Palatinate Electorate, for which she and her descendants were compensated in 1670 with the feudal lordship over Stebbach and the Raugrafen title. Of her 13 children, only eight were born, and only the eldest daughter, Karoline, married. In 1683 she married Meinhard von Schomberg (1641-1719). Their youngest daughter Maria married her second uncle Christoph Martin II in 1717 , who was born in 1716 by Emperor Charles VI. in the imperial counts had been raised. Since the Duke of Schomberg did not have a male heir, Count Christoph Martin II. Von Degenfeld acquired names, coats of arms and this part of the property of the House of Schomberg through marriage , albeit without receiving the ducal dignity. Since then, the von Degenfeld-Schomberg and von Degenfeld-Schonburg families have called themselves.

Schomberg Castle was built in 1820/23 for one of the family lines and is still inhabited by her today.

The family was able to enlarge their local fiefdom in the 18th century, for example from 1704 to 1797 by the places Moosbrunn and Rothenberg . From 1711 to 1762 the family also owned the stately Freihof in Kirchheim unter Teck .

Under the sons of Christoph Martins II. Son August Christoph (1730-1814), the Eybach line split into four lines. Gustav Eugen Friedrich Christoph (1764–1807) continued the Eybach line, Maximilian (1766–1816) founded the line to Erdöszádo (or Erdőszáda) in Hungary, who until 1945 owned the Baktalórántháza Castle . Friedrich Christoph (1769–1848) founded the line on Ramholz Castle (which, however, only remained in the possession until 1790), Johannes Philipp Christoph (1773–1842) founded the line on Streichenberg Castle and Schomberg Castle . The Eybach line had Catholic and Reformed members, the lines in Hungary and Ramholz were Reformed, the line in Schomberg is Catholic. The latter had a new mansion built near the Streichenberg Castle by the Baden building officer Karl August Schwarz : the Schomberg Castle, built between 1820 and 1823 in the Weinbrenner style, which is still inhabited by the family and where the family archive is located. One of the family's graves is in the cemetery in Stebbach.
