history

Until the 18th century

The emergence of Dürnau is likely to fall in the more recent expansion period of the 9th to 13th century. The place was first mentioned as Durnon in 1275 in the liber decimationis . The lower aristocratic family of the Dürner von Dürnau were probably in the service of the Counts of Aichelberg as ministerials from the 13th to the 15th century . In 1339 Dürnau became part of Württemberg . In 1479 Count Ulrich sold the place to the Lords of Zillenhardt . After the last Lord von Zillenhardt died out in 1623, the village fell to the Lords of Degenfeld . In 1684 the place was sold to Kurbayern . In 1711 the Degenfeld initially acquired one half, and in 1771 the other half.

19th and 20th centuries

Due to the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss and the associated mediatization Dürnau 1806 was again incorporated into Württemberg and the Oberamt Göppingen . With the municipal reform in 1938 it came to the district of Göppingen .

Surname

The origin of the place name is not completely clear. The name is probably derived from a medieval watchtower that stood on the area of today's municipality.

Religions

Dürnau has been evangelical since the Reformation . Only since 1963 has there been a Roman Catholic church in the village (St. Michael), which belongs to the Bad Boll parish . Previously, the local Catholics were allowed to celebrate services in the Protestant church.

Attractions

Archway to the former castle, access to the Grail Glass Museum
Entrance to the castle in winter 2010 with a wooden figure of Hannes (installed in 2009)

A restored stables with a castle bridge, a moat and a castle cellar are reminiscent of the former moated castle Dürnau from the 12th century.

The church of St. Cyriakus , which was first mentioned in 1275, is the parish church of the Protestant parish in the church district of Göppingen . The church expansion of 1583 created a late mannerist building with late Gothic wall paintings (Ten Commandments, scenes from the life of Jesus) on the gallery on the north wall and numerous grave monuments of the Lords of Zillenhart. Christoph Martin von Degenfeld , among others, is buried here. From 1681 to 1964 the church was used as a simultaneous church. The crescent moon on the top of the church tower is not uncommon for churches and, contrary to legend, it is not an item of booty from the Turkish wars.

To the south of the community there is an educational fruit path and the Swabian Proverbs Path .

Dürnau received a silver medal in the state competition " Our village should be more beautiful - our village has a future" in the 1999-2001 competition.

Museums

In the archway of the former castle there is now a glass museum that bears witness to the eventful history of the Gralglas glassworks, which used to be located on site .
