Michael Kohnle

Michael Kohnle (born May 3, 1970 in Göppingen ) is a former German decathlete .

He became German youth champion in 1987 and took fourth place at the 1987 European Junior Championships . The following year, Kohnle won the gold medal at the Junior World Championships ahead of Robert Změlík, and in 1989 he became Junior European Champion. He also set a junior world record in indoor heptathlon and a junior European record in decathlon that year. In 1989, the German Sports Aid Foundation named Kohnle Junior Sportsman of the Year .

In 1990 the Kohnle won the German championship and reached eleventh place at the European championships in Split. At the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo, he was twelfth and at the World Championships 1993 in Stuttgart ninth. In 1994 he took part in the European Indoor Championships and finished ninth. The following year, Kohnle was third at the Götzis all- around meeting with a personal best of 8302 points. At the World Championships in Gothenburg, however, he was disqualified in the 400-meter run after crossing the lane boundary, and did not finish the decathlon. Shortly afterwards he won the German championship for the second time in Ulm. In 1996 Kohnle was first German runner-up, but the winner Stefan Schmid was later disqualified. The following year he ended his athletics career and then played another year at Frisch Auf Göppingen in the 2nd handball Bundesliga .

Kohnle started for the gymnastics club Göppingen (1981–93), SG Ulm (1994) and SSV Ulm 1846 (1995–97). He is a savings bank specialist.
