Meinhard von Schomberg , 3rd Duke of Schomberg, 1st Duke of Leinster KG (* the thirtieth June 1641 in Cologne , † July 5 . Jul / 16th July  1719 greg. In Hillingdon , Middlesex ) was a German-French-British General and Army Commander.

Life

Meinhard von Schomberg was the second son of Marshal Friedrich von Schomberg from the Schönburg family on Wesel . Naturalized as a Frenchman together with his father, he excelled in the wars of Louis XIV in many higher positions, including the siege of Freiburg in 1677 and that of Rheinfelden the following year. He then came to Brandenburg with his father , where he worked on 15./25. November 1688 as general of the cavalry and colonel of the satellite body guard was employed. He dealt with mechanics and invented a diving apparatus for working on wrecks. The machine was tested in the Thames in 1692 . In 1693 he was granted a 20-year concession for all shipwrecks on the American coast between 12 ° south and 40 ° north.

Meinhard von Schomberg died as Duke of Schomberg and Leinster in English service on 5th / 16th. July 1719 and was buried at Westminster Abbey on August 4th . Since the only son Charles Louis of Schomberg, Marquess of Harwich , had died before the father in 1713, the dukes of Duke of Schomberg and Duke of Leinster became extinct .

The name “Schomberg” passed through the daughter Mary to her husband, Count Christoph Martin von Degenfeld , her second uncle, and their children. The descendants are still called Counts of Degenfeld-Schonburg . Meinhard von Schomberg is also one of the direct ancestors of the British Princess Lady Diana Spencer (1961–1997).

His first wife was Barbara Luisa Rizzi , a Piedmontese princess whom he married on August 3, 1667. The couple had no children.
