Duke of Schomberg was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was on May 9, 1689 by King Wilhelm III. created for his German military leader Friedrich von Schomberg . Together with the Dukedom he was awarded the subordinate titles of Marquess of Harwich , Earl of Brentford and Baron Teyes . All of the named titles were awarded with the special addition that they should initially go to his fifth son Karl von Schomberg upon his death, to his brother, his second son Meinhard von Schomberg and his descendants upon expiry of his male line of descendants , and upon expiry of its male line of offspring to the remaining male offspring.

When Friedrich fell in battle in 1690, his son Karl von Schomberg inherited the title. He also fell childless in battle in 1691, so the title went to his brother Meinhard von Schomberg. The title expired when Meinhard died in 1719.

Other titles

Friedrich von Schomberg had already been awarded the Portuguese title of Count Conde de Mértola in 1663 . After his death the title fell to his son Meinhard and after him in 1719 to his daughter Frederica von Schomberg, wife of Robert Darcy, 3rd Earl of Holderness .

Meinhard was also raised to Duke of Leinster in the Peerage of Ireland in 1691 . The title expired on his death in 1719.
