Trichopodus poptae is a newly described in the September 2014 Fadenfischart from the group of " Eastern Gouramis " (genus Trichopodus ). The species found on the Indonesian - Malay island of Borneo is named in honor of the Dutch ichthyologist Canna Maria Louise Popta (1860–1929).

features

As with all threadfish, in Trichopodus poptae the pelvic fin spine is reduced and the anterior branch of the first soft pelvic ray is elongated into a thread-like filament serving as a tactile organ. The new species can be distinguished from other species by the complete lack of any color pattern. Only on the caudal fin base is a single, black spot. In addition, Trichopodus poptae has fewer scales in a central longitudinal row along the sides of the body (34–38 vs. 40–65), fewer dorsal fin rays than the gourdfish ( Trichopodus pectoralis ) (14–16 vs. 17–18) but more spine rays in the dorsal fin than the moonlight gourami ( Trichopodus microlepis ) (6–7 vs. 3–4). In addition, it has fewer anal fin rays than scoop and moonlight threadfish (38–41 vs. 44–50). Like all threadfish, Trichopodus poptae builds a foam nest for reproduction and, in addition to the gills , has the labyrinth organ with which it can breathe atmospheric oxygen .
