Theophil Frey

Theophil Heinrich Frey (born April 26, 1845 in Kissy , Sierra Leone , † August 3, 1904 in Bad Liebenzell ) was a German architect.

Life

Theophil Frey was the son of a missionary. He lost his father at the age of twelve. He attended school in Korntal and then studied at the Technical University in Stuttgart . Christian Friedrich von Leins , Bäumer and Tritschler were among his teachers . In 1867 he finished his college education and went to England for two years, where he worked for the church builder Street. He then worked for Leins until 1870. Frey concentrated on church buildings and, in his early days, was still based on older architectural styles. An obituary for Frey reads: “A Methodist church built at the beginning of the independent activity in Stuttgart still breathes the spirit of the English Gothic, as does the Pelargus house on the new Weinsteige (cf. Archit. Rundschau 1886, plate. 94). Later he was more creative, but always based on the best examples from the early Gothic, Romanesque and transition styles ”. In 1899 he took part in a competition for the garrison church in Ludwigsburg and received second prize for his proposal. Frey died during a recreational stay in the Black Forest after suffering a stroke.

In January 1904, an invitation to tender for the construction of a Protestant church with 1200 seats in Mannheim based on the Wiesbaden church building program took place, in which Frey, then a building officer in Stuttgart, participated together with his colleague Christian Schrade . The Baroque art nouveau design by Freys and Schrades prevailed. However, Frey died before the Christ Church was completed. Also only after Frey's death in 1905 was the renovation and enlargement of the Mauritius church in Betzingen carried out, which he had planned together with Johannes Müller. In 1907 the Evangelical St. James Church was built in Pfalzgrafenweiler , which also goes back to plans by Theophil Frey.
