history

The year the castle was founded is still unclear: depending on the source, the year 1080 or 1240 is mentioned.

Staufeneck was built by the Lords of Staufeneck , who were probably relatives of the Staufer , as they also have a lion in their coat of arms. They were the owners of the complex until it was taken over by the von Rechberg zu Staufeneck family in 1333 , until their family perished in 1599 with the death of nine-year-old Albrecht Hermann. Now the mother inherited Gertraud von Schutzbar called Milchling (also: Burgmilchlingen) and aunts, one - Maria Magdalena - sold her share to Duke Friedrich I of Württemberg . But then he had to use force to gain access to the castle. So he sold Hohenrechberg on September 19, 1601, but kept half of Staufeneck, the other half of which Gertraud owned as a widow's residence. The Duke did not sell his half until February 16, 1604. Gertrud married Count Ludwig von Löwenstein (1569–1635) (son of Ludwig III. Von Löwenstein ) and sold the castle in 1623 to Friedrich von Württemberg, who sold it to Georg Ludwig von Freyberg , Freiherrn zu Justingen and Öpfingen sold. After Freyberg and his wife had died in 1631, the daughter Anna Margaretha inherited. It was under the tutelage of Bishop Heinrich von Augsburg . Anna Margaretha was married to Sergeant General Wilhelm von Guyn (William Gun (1603–1661)), who had bought the castle in 1642. After his death in 1661, the widow sold the facility to Ferdinand von Degenfeld in 1665 . His niece Luise Raugräfin zu Pfalz now received the castle. After her death in 1733, the son of her sister Karoline Elisabeth (1659–1696) inherited Christoph Martin von Degenfeld-Schonburg (1689–1769).

From 1800 the castle fell into disrepair. Anselm Schott was born in an adjoining building in 1843, in what is now known as the “Anselm Schott House”. From 1844 the castle was uninhabited and large areas had to be demolished.

The 27 meter high keep was not made accessible again until 1926 . In 1927 Hildegard Wörner began cultivating the western part of the castle ruins. Her daughter Lore and her husband Erich Straubinger took over the inn in 1973 and developed the business into an upscale restaurant with a banquet hall .

In 1990 they bought the restaurant and the castle ruins from the city of Böblingen , and their son Rolf Straubinger became head chef. Under the direction of son-in-law Klaus Schurr, a hotel was built in 2000 and opened in December 2002. Just one year later, it was rated 5 stars by DEHOGA . In 2012 the restaurant will be modernized.
