The small Greek island Telendos ( Greek Τέλενδος [ ˈtɛlɛnðɔs ] ( f. Sg. )) In the eastern Aegean is administered by the municipality of Kalymnos in the South Aegean region .

location

Telendos is about a kilometer west of Kalymnos. The uninhabited islands of Epano are in the southwest and Agia Kyriaki about 1.4 km south. The also uninhabited island of Kalavros is located about 2 km northeast of the Bay of Arginonda (Κόλπος Αργινώντα).

The image of Telendos is shaped by the Rachi (Ράχη) ridge, which runs through the island from Aspros Kavos (Άσπρος Κάβος 'White Cape') in the west to near the east coast and reaches 459 m in the center of the island. In the south-east there is an approximately 900 m long and almost 400 m wide flat peninsula facing south, with Cape Pnigmenos (Ακρωτήριο Πνιγμένος) as the southernmost point of the island. The eponymous place on the island is located at the transition to the peninsula on the east side. Opposite the strait of the sea on Kalymnos are the places Myrties and Masouri .

Names

The origin of the name Telendos is considered to be pre-Greek today. The island of Agalia or Klarus is called by travelers and geographers of the early Middle Ages . The Florentine monk and traveler Cristoforo Buondelmonti called the island Telendos in 1420 and describes it as uninhabited. The name can also be found on a Greek portolan from the beginning of the 16th century. The Italian geographer Francesco Piacenza also mentions it in 1688 and reports of an uninhabited island with a pine forest. From Riga Velestinlis it is in the second half of the 18th century as Klaros referred (Κλάρος).

mythology

According to legend, Telendos the king of Pothea threw his daughter Potha into the sea on Kalymnos because of her unfulfilled love for Andronikos the prince of Kastelli. Her body froze instantly and her face stood out on the rachi, the highest peak of Telendos.

history

Ruins on Telendos

The history of Telendos is closely linked to Kalymnos, as the island was separated from the larger neighboring island as a result of an earthquake in 554 AD.

Excavations on three private properties in the years 2000 to 2001 and 2003 provided evidence that the area of today's location was inhabited from the Hellenistic period to the earthquake in the Byzantine period. The ruins of a theater are the most important testimony to the pre-Christian era. The settlement expanded during the Roman period and reached its greatest expansion in the early Christian years. Remains of five early Christian basilicas from the 5th and 7th centuries AD testify to an important Christian center.

In the middle of the 7th century AD in Byzantine times, the place was abandoned and a fortified settlement was founded about 3 km northwest at an altitude of 300 m. The old place by the sea was gradually repopulated in the 11th century and the Byzantine settlement abandoned. In the early 20th century, sponge divers, fishermen and sailors settled in the eastern part of Telendos.

Population development

As on other small islands, poor infrastructure and limited resources lead to development problems on Telendos, which leads to a continuous decline in the population.

Economy and Infrastructure

The residents earn their livelihood by fishing and farming to a small extent. The main source of income lies in the income from individual tourism. There are 200 guest beds on the island.

Several climbing routes have been opened up for sport climbers since 2007. In addition, other new areas were created and documented in the period that followed. In the meantime, the climbers have become a decisive economic factor on the island, which guarantees a seasonally balanced occupancy of the companies even outside the high tourist season (Jun - Aug). The best times for a climbing trip to Telendos (or Kalymnos) are April to the beginning of June and September to the beginning of November. Every year in autumn there is a big international climbing festival on Kalymnos and Telendos.

Since 2013, climbing tourism has been monitored by a local mountain rescue service, which is financed by local business people and donations from the climbers.

Telendos can be reached via the port of Myrties on Kalymnos every 30 minutes, the journey takes 10 minutes. In addition, there are also direct connections to the climbing areas on Telendos through the individual captains of the ferries. This shortens the journey to the rocks on Telendos from 50 minutes to under 10 minutes.
