Heinrich von Knöringen (born February 5, 1570 in Nesselwang , † June 25, 1646 in Dillingen ) was Heinrich V. Bishop of Augsburg from 1599 to 1646.

Life

Heinrich from the Swabian ministerial family Knöringen was the son of the episcopal caretaker Johann Christoph von Knöringen . In 1586 he entered the clergy and three years later studied law at the University of Ingolstadt , moved to the Collegium Germanicum in Rome in 1590 and studied at the University of Siena from 1591 to 1593 .

On September 15, 1595 he received the ordination of the deacon in Augsburg. In 1598 he was elected by the Augsburg Cathedral Chapter to succeed the late Bishop Johann Otto von Gemmingen because of his services to the Catholic cause . In May 1599 he was ordained a priest, and on June 13, 1599, the bishop of Eichstätt, Johann Konrad von Gemmingen , gave him the episcopal ordination.

Heinrich von Knöringen is particularly known for his advocacy of church renewal. The Augsburg Edict of Restitution, ratified by Ferdinand II in 1629, fell during his term of office . During the Thirty Years' War he had to seek refuge in Reutte, Hall, Imst in Tyrol and Innsbruck from 1632 to 1635 and from 1645 onwards.

He died after 48 years in the episcopal office. His remains were buried in the Dillingen study church.
