Heinrich IV. Came from the noble family von Lichtenau , who had their headquarters in a castle near Mindelzell , and worked as a canon in Wiesensteig near Göppingen from an early age . After he had acquired his baccalaureus and doctorate at the universities in Freiburg im Breisgau and Pavia , he was canon at the Augsburg Cathedral from 1473 . In 1477 he was appointed official and in 1485 vicar general.

After the death of his predecessor Friedrich II von Zollern , von Lichtenau was consecrated bishop in 1505 in the Dillingen basilica of Sankt Peter by Eichstätter Prince-Bishop Gabriel von Eyb (1455-1535). In the same year he initiated the construction of the palace in Zusmarshausen and the new construction of the palace in Oberdorf . During his time as Bishop of Augsburg, Dillingen Castle was also converted from a medieval fortified castle to a castle in the Gothic style.

Shortly before his death, von Lichtenau, in consultation with the cathedral chapter , chose Christoph von Stadion as his coadjutor , who on April 10, 1517 - von Lichtenau was already seriously ill - was entrusted with the right of succession by Pope Leo X. Two days later von Lichtenau died in Dillingen, was autopsied by the Augsburg city doctor Ambrosius Jung (1471–1548) and buried in a chapel in Augsburg Cathedral.
